The Dubai Municipality was established in 1954, with a staff of seven personnel tasked with minor tasks such as keeping the city clean. On February 28, 1957, the initial decree establishing the Municipality was published, with 23 municipal council members chosen from among the country’s elders and traders. It gave the Municipality particular rights, the most significant of which was to look after the city’s health and architectural issues, arrange construction and beautification projects, and make constructive recommendations to the government.

Since then, Dubai Municipality has grown tremendously, growing with time and taking on a variety of responsibilities. The Municipality grew in tandem with the Emirate of Dubai’s expansion, and it now employs 11,000 people across 34 departments. In terms of services provided and projects completed, it is one of the major government institutions. The municipality is a major contributor to the Emirate of Dubai’s growth and evolution.
